Optimisation of a Diesel-Electric Ship Propulsion and Power Generation System Using a Genetic Algorithm

In recent decades, the design of ship propulsion systems has been focusing on energy efficiency and low pollutant emissions. this framework, diesel–electric become a standard for many types proven its worth flexible management. This paper presents an approach to optimal systems, minimising fuel consumption while meeting power speed requirements. A genetic algorithm performs optimisation, used determine number type engines installed on-board engines’ power, selecting within dataset four-stroke diesel engines. The same is then adapted applied load sharing strategy in off-design conditions, taking advantage high flexibility plants. order apply algorithm, layout formulated as optimisation problem, translating system requirements into cost function set linear non-linear constraints. Eventually, method case study vessel: first, plants are determined, working conditions computed. AC DC network solutions compared critically discussed both conditions.
